Schweich’s Defense of His McCaskill Donation Doesn’t Add Up

By Guest Blogger Tom Sauer

Tom Schweich is running in the Republican primary for Missouri Auditor against Allen Icet on August 3.

Tom Schweich gave $500 to liberal Democrat Claire McCaskill in the 2002 election cycle.

Schweich was recently asked about this contribution and his attacking Republicans for their “mean-spirited moral dictates” in a column he wrote for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

You call see the fireworks Here.

In defending the contribution to McCaskill, the Schweich camp has tried to suggest that the Republican candidate that year was unworthy of support. For example, Schweich has been quoted : “That year, the Republican party could not field a credible candidate and, I believe, eventually settled on a convicted felon as the nominee. While I am reliably Republican, our candidate must pass the laugh test first.”

Nice try.

Tom Schweich’s donation to liberal Democrat Claire McCaskill came on December 11, 2001, months before the March 2002 filing deadline and BEFORE any Republican candidate had filed.
